Photon is easier to upgrade, you can buy the kit here.

If your Z-axis direction is not right, please edit the parameter or print this file directly.

Why upgrade?

The original Anycubic Photon S comes with the Sharp04 screen, which is 5.5 inches 2K RGB LCD, since 2018 there are Mono LCD coming out, and it is been widely used during 2019, Phrozen sonic Mini, Anycubic Photon mono series, and ELEGOO mars 2 series. we also write an article about RGB vs Mono, you can check here.

Now, most new resin 3d printers come with Mono screens, and even with 8K level resolutions.

In General, the Mono screen has 3 advantages compared with the RGB LCD.

Faster printing speed

The mono LCD has a better UV light transmittance, which means when you use the same resin, it takes less time to make it cure, and in the Chitubox setting, you will only need an exposure time of around 2.5s.  In RGB LCD the exposure time is about 8s~12s. Each layer saves you a few seconds, if you are printing a large file, it is much faster.

More durable in lifespan

The mono LCD has a process optimization, which makes the screen can run in the long term under the UV light,  it is suspected to work over 2,000 hours. and the RGB LCD can only work about 200 hours.

Better contrast ratio

The mono screen is designed for 3d printers, it also considers the usage of 3d printing technology, a better contrast ratio means you will get better details on the models, especially in sharpness.

For Anycubic Photon S:

This kit comes with a Chitu L V2 that supports 6inch mono LCD.

You only need to follow our installation video.

Anycubic Photon S mono

Adjust the settings on CHITUBOX

You can use the setting of Mars 2 pro or add the default printer directly from CHITUBOX after upgrading this kit because the V2 board can only recognize .ctb file format, the original Photon S use .photon format won’t be read.

The board comes with the right firmware, no need to update it.

The actual printing size will be bigger than 5.5 inches but not reach 6.08inch after modifying, please use this setting below.

build area offset

If your Z-axis direction is not right, you can edit the parameter file M8004 to fix it,

Or print this file we edited for you directly, and download it here.

  1. Overall, I am happy with the upgrade.
The quality of the prints was not significantly improved, only in very small details you can see improvements in definition.
The biggest positive aspect for me are the decreased printing times. With a reduction of exposure times from 7.0s to 1.4s the total printing times were reduced by around 35%.
Sadly, the Chitu L V2 board is not fully compatible with the touchscreen of the Anycubic Photon S. After the upgrade, the touchscreen shows scan lines which while do not inhibit the touch functionality, are still quite annoying. I had to buy a new touchscreen (which is a newer revision – v3.10 – in relation to the original v1.0 that came with my printer) to solve that issue. The seller should have properly disclosed this fact and preferably already offer a kit with a replacement touchscreen (even if they need to charge more for it).
The UI that comes with the upgrade kit is also quite generic and crops out the layer count information.

  2. I’m very happy with the upgrade.

Quality of the prints went up a bit, I suspect mainly because now I use 1.4s exposure time, instead of 8s (anycubic basic grey resin) and light bleeding effect is greatly reduced because of this.
Main advantage is ofc faster printing time, and (I hope) longer lifespan of the screen
I stopped struggling with presupported files failing at the support tips, but maybe my old screen was jus slowly dying
Some mentioned touchscreen issues, personally I found none, everything works like it’s supposed to

    Now the nagatives:
Installation is not that difficult, but youtube video is borderline useless. Really important steps, for example how to orient the screen so it is with correct side up, or how to fold the screen cable so it’s safely out of the way of your tools, are straight up not shown. So be advised you need quite the skill in tinkering with you stuff to confidently install the upgrade. Not to mention that my version of the board looked different than the one showed in the video
Technically I think you lose resolution with the upgrade, since you have bigger screen with same amount of pixels, so it sould be bigger than 47microns (original pixel size) It is more than compensated with shorter exposure time, and what comes with it: less light bleeding.
Since the screen is bigger than original opening, it just sits above it in it’s own frame, hold only with a bit of tape on top of it, it doesn’t look very secure at all, but hey, as long as it works, right? Main issue with that is now VAT itself is a bit higher, so you need to be careful about any mods you have installed. I had additional mount next to the build plate so after prints I can hang it tilted to drip resin faster, it no longer fits. Similar issues can come up with flex plates installed, so be vary of that

Overall I recommend the upgrade if you have old photon s around, print quality is great, details are more crisp, build area is a bit bigger, print times are lower, fingers crossed about longer lifespan. Instalation guide is not that great, so beware

  3. After the upgrade, imprimo with resin 1.2segundos quanton3d with time display.
In chitubox have set up as elegoo Mars 2 Pro, and change the screen size, as the seller suggested.
Can be bad contact issue but now until the display touch improved.

Super satisfied with the result of printer.

Ordered 15 Jun, and arrived in 28/06/2022 in Brazil, mines.

  4. Amazing upgrade, slow printing time and best results.

  5. Installation was very easy, and so far it has been entirely plug and play. The issue I have is that with the screen fram, and a magnetic build plate, it takes out too much Z-axis that my printer no longer works. Chitu may want to consider offering a end stop replacement (just the metal shim) or adding some shim stock to extend that plate down.
